How to Keep Your Gutters in Great Condition

Aluminum gutters typically last about 20 years, while copper gutters can last up to 50 years! With proper care and maintenance, you’ll help your gutters stay in good working order and prolong their useful lives, which in turn, helps keep your home in peak condition.

  • Routinely Clean Out the Gutters: Scooping leaves, twigs, and other debris from your gutters every few months ensures rainwater flows freely instead of backing up and causing damage. Once the debris is emptied, you can use your hose to run water through to flush the gutters and test for proper flow.
  • Inspect Downspouts: A garden hose turned to the high-pressure setting will help you clear out clogs that may be present in downspouts.
  • Periodically Check Gutters & Downspouts: An occasional walk around your house with a close eye on the gutters and downspouts is a simple task. Just be on the lookout for cracks, small holes, or areas where gutters could be pulling away from your house.
  • Downspout Extensions: Depending on the way your home is built and positioned, you might consider adding extensions to your downspouts to direct water further away from your foundation. During the next heavy rain, try to observe whether water pools around your structure. If you aren’t located on a hill and water seems to be collecting too close to your foundation, replacing your downspout splash block with an extension can safeguard your foundation and prevent backed up debris from degrading downspouts prematurely.
